Bird Navigation: A Clear View of Magnetoreception
نویسنده
چکیده
Experiments with robins wearing frosted goggles have revealed a tantalising relationship between object vision and magnetoreception, shedding further light on the close interconnection between the two senses in migratory birds.

Magnetoreception and its use in bird navigation.
Recent advances have brought new insight into the physiological mechanisms that enable birds and other animals to use magnetic fields for orientation. Many birds seem to have two magnetodetection senses, one based on magnetite near the beak and one based on light-dependent radical-pair processes in the bird's eye(s). Among the most exciting recent results are: first, behavioural responses of bi...

Lesion studies have shown that the pigeon hippocampus is a critical structure for spatial mapping of the home loft area [1,2]. More recently, it was found that the left hemisphere of pigeons appears to play a role in homing mechanisms [7], while studies in caged migratory birds have indicated a possible left-hemispheric predominance of magnetoreception [8]. Since the occurrence of theta rhythm ...
متن کاملNavigation by Induction-Based Magnetoreception in Elasmobranch Fishes
A quantitative frequency-domain model of induction-based magnetoreception is presented for elasmobranch fishes. We show that orientation with respect to the geomagnetic field can be determined by synchronous detection of electrosensory signals at harmonics of the vestibular frequency. The sensitivity required for this compass-sense mechanism is shown to be less than that known from behavioral e...
متن کاملMagnetoreception of Directional Information in Birds Requires Nondegraded Vision
The magnetic compass orientation of birds is light dependent. The respective directional information, originating in radical pair processes, is mediated by the right eye. These findings suggest possible interactions between magnetoreception and vision, in particular with the perception of contours, because the right eye has been found to be dominant in discrimination tasks requiring object visi...
متن کاملMagnetite-based magnetoreception.
Orientation, navigation, and homing are critical traits expressed by organisms ranging from bacteria through higher vertebrates. Sensory systems that aid such behavior have provided key selective advantages to these groups over the past 4 billion years, and are highly evolved; magnetoreception is no exception. Across many species and groups of organisms, compelling evidence exists that the phys...
